Owner and Head Instructor
I’ve known I wanted to study martial arts since I was five years old. That dream became a reality when, at 22, I began training under GGM Tony Thompson as part of the Ernie Reyes West Coast Association. Since then, my passion for martial arts has only grown—beginning with my first black belt test in 1993 and continuing through to my Mastery Test for 8th-degree black belt in June 2024.
In 2003, my wife, sons, and I opened West Coast Mission. As my dedication to martial arts deepened, so did my love for teaching. I find great fulfillment in working with students of all ages, from young children to adults, and watching the transformation they experience—physically, mentally, and emotionally—as they progress on their journey toward black belt.
Beyond technique, I enjoy sharing the life skills martial arts has taught me. Having my entire family involved in this journey has brought us closer together, allowing us to bond, grow, and truly enjoy something meaningful as a family. Through martial arts, we continue to learn and evolve—together.

About Us
KJN Jovi Fernando Jr. | Instructor
Hello, my name is KJN Jovi Jr. I grew up surrounded by the West Coast family and began training alongside my dad at home before officially starting my martial arts journey at age 8 at West Coast Newark. I earned my first black belt at 12 and have continued to train and teach ever since. One of the most meaningful milestones in my journey was the 2016 Mastery Test, where I had the honor of testing alongside my dad and brothers as I earned my 5th-degree black belt. I was especially proud when West Coast Mission opened in 2003—something my dad and I had envisioned together since I was in junior high.
Today, I help manage our family-owned school and continue to pursue my passion for teaching. I find great joy in watching students grow, both physically and mentally, as they progress toward earning their black belts.
KJN Jake Fernando | Instructor
Hello, my name is KJN Jake. I grew up immersed in martial arts, both through my family at West Coast and in my personal life. From a young age, I watched my dad and brother train at West Coast Newark, mimicking their punches and kicks until I officially began my own training at the age of 6. In 2004, I earned my first black belt at age 12, and I’ve continued training ever since. One of the highlights of my journey was testing alongside my brother for our 5th-degree black belts during the 2016 Mastery Test. In addition to continuing my training, I’ve been expanding my knowledge by studying Kali, a Filipino martial art.
Outside the studio, I’ve been focused on developing my clothing brand and creating original art designs. Looking ahead, one of my goals is to open my own martial arts studio and continue sharing my passion with others.
KJN Jalen Fernando | Instructor
Hello, my name is KJN Jalen. I began training at West Coast Mission at the age of 5 under the guidance of my parents and brothers. Growing up in a martial arts family, the studio quickly became a second home and an integral part of my daily life. I earned my first black belt at age 10 and was honored to receive my 5th-degree black belt in 2024. I have a passion for tricking and enjoy working with martial arts weapons in creative ways. Sparring has always been my favorite event—even as a young Dragon student—and I still believe the best sparring gear color is pink. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to travel with my brothers to participate in and demonstrate at various seminars and events.
Today, I continue to teach and train alongside my family, sharing the legacy and love for martial arts that has shaped my life.
BKJN Lily Marcaida Fernando | Instructor and Manager
Hello, my name is BKJN Lily. I am both an instructor and the front desk manager at West Coast Mission. My martial arts journey began in 1998 when my two oldest sons invited me to train alongside them. At the time, I was affectionately known as "the cool mom" for joining in—but after earning my first-degree black belt, I realized how much I personally enjoyed the art and chose to continue training for myself.
In 2003, my husband and I opened West Coast Mission with our sons. Since then, it has evolved into a true family passion and a deeply rewarding part of our lives.
SBN Zyra Maine Pineda | Instructor and Manager
Hello, I am SBN Zy. I am an instructor and the front desk manager. I began my martial arts journey in May 2018. Although I was initially reluctant to participate, I quickly developed a passion for it as I discovered my strengths within the discipline. I particularly enjoy practicing forms and learning Korean terminology, and my favorite weapons are the bo staff and kamas.
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is teaching our Tiny Dragons and working with students with special needs. As a special education teacher by profession, I bring a unique perspective to the mat, allowing me to thoughtfully adapt the curriculum to create a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment. My goal is to introduce more autistic children to martial arts and to help them experience the personal growth, confidence, and joy it can offer.
